SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB MEETING. First Day—Thursday, April 28. [by TELEGRAPH.] Timaru, To-day. Stewards—J. W. White, M. Jonas, J. A. Gamack, D. Maclean, and K. Stansell ; Judge, M. Studholme; Starter, T. Hall; Clerk of the Course, A. St. G. Hamersley; Handicapper, E. Griffiths ; Clerk of the Scales, J, Meikle. The races attracted a large crowd. The weather was beautiful. One totalisator put in an appearance in the Grand Stand enclosure, and did a roaring trade. The sporting fraternity- was well represented, but business seemed dull with the bookmakers. The first event on the card was the Trial Stakes, of 50 sovs., for horses that have not won 200 sovs. in one event, or two events, each of the value of 100 sovs. or upwards, up to time of starting. Maidens at starting allowed—For three-year-olds, 3lbs ; four years, 71bs ; five years and upwards, 101 b. Weight for age ; distance, about 1J mile. Mr H. Prince’s Sir Garnet 1 Mr Chaafe’s Nautilus ... ... ... 2 Mr G. Bates’ Hilda ... ... ... 3
Nautilus started away with the lead, and was soon overhauled by Sir Garnet. A neck and neck race ensued, Sir Garnet winning by half a length. Time—2min lojsec.
