DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT EPSOM.
(by telegraph.) Auckland, To-day. The residence of Mr Hancocks, of the United Service Hotel, at Epsom, has been totally destroyed by fire, caused by the upsetting of a kerosene lamp. Mr Hancocks was absent at the time, and Mrs Hancocks had got up to attend to one of the children, when she accidentally overturned the lamp. The flames spread rapidly to the bedcurtains and furniture, and Mrs Hancocks barely escaped in her night-dress. Everything was lost. The house and furniture were insured in the New Zealand office for L 1,400, but it is estimated that sum will not cover half the cost.
