ACCIDENTS.
A Boy Drowned at Kaiapoi.—Yesterday afternoon, about two o’clock, a son of Mr George Templeton, Raven street, Kaiapoi, was drowned in the river Waimakariri. ■ It appears that the little fellow was playing on the groin a little above the footbridge, when, by some mischance, he fell into the water, which at this spot is very deep, and before assistance could be obtained he was drowned. —Lyttelton Times.
A Boat Capsized. —The Napier arrived off the Wairau bar early on Tuesday and anchored, awaiting signals from the Pilot station as to the safety of the bar. Captain Fisk offered to put on shore in a small boat any persons who desired. Mr Fell, the owner of the boat, five passengers, two seamen, and the mate put off; those on board anxiously watching her progress as slio approached the heavy surf on the Boulder Bank about a mile distant. The anxiety was increased when it became evident that an accident had happened. At first it was supposed that the boat had capsized, but it subsequently turned out that, after having a narrow escape from one roller, a second one completely swamped her ; washing one of the seamen overboard, who narrowly escaped, the boat rolling on him. The third roller fortunately drove the boat sufficiently ashore to enable all hands to struggle out on to the beach. The Napier steamed into Port Underwood, and intended to attempt the bar again, after putting into White’s Bay to telegraph despatches.
