ELGIN SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The adjourned annual meeting of householders was held in the schoolhouac on Monday evening last. There was a good attendauc.-. On the motion of Mr P. limes, seconded by.Mr S. Pcott, Mr J. S. Bruce was voted to the chair. The chairman read the minutes of the last annual

meeting, which were confirmed. He then road the following annual report :

On ihc I2th May last, Mr I’roudlock, formerly of Weedon School, was nominated master for this district by the Committee, and he took office on the 17th June. The Committee further nominated Mrs Biottdlock as sewing mistress on the 28th June, and she was duly appointed by the Board of Education. About the end of July, the Government established a post-office at the schnolhouse. In August there were 45 children on the register. The school site lias been planted, a new well sunk, a gymnasium eroe'ed, and blinds provided to tho schoolhousc. The September quarter’s return shows 58 children belonging to the schcol, hut since that date there has been a seriou 1 falling-off in the attendance. In accordance with sections 82 and 103 of the Education Act, the accounts of the Committee for the year ending 31st December have been audited lay the auditor appointed by the Committee, and collided to as being correct. The Committee is of opinion that clause 64 of the Education Act requires to he altered as follows ‘-On the fourth Monday in the month of [amiary in each year,’’ shall read— “On the first Monday in (he month of April in each year.” Further, that cumulative voting at elections he done away with, and that clause 65 shall he in substance ns follows: —-“At every election ol a school committee every voter shall be entitled to one vote, which he may give to one or more of the candidates, as he thinks lit, up to the number ofthe committee to be elected. -J. Air Aml row Botham moved, Mr P. Imios seconded, that the report as read bo ad >ptcd. Tho chairman then read the principal clauses in the Education Act in reference to election of committees, and called upon the electors present to nominate candidates. The following gentlemen were then duly nominated :—Messrs Botham, Thomas Holmes, Samuel Scott, James Skillcn, Peter Tunes, John Keir, Henry Moffatt, John Cochrane, and J. S. Bruce. A poll being demanded, the same was taken strictly in accordance with the ballot, and resulted as follows :—J. S. Bruce, 21; John Cochrane, 12; A. Botham, 9 ; Thomas Holmes, 9 ; James Skillcn, 7 ; Peter Bines, G ; Henry Moffatt, 5 ; John Keir, 4 ; Samuel Scott, 4. The chairman then declared the firstnamed five duly elected members of the Elgin School Commilteo. A Committee meeting was then hold, tit which Mr J. S.

Bruce was re-elected Chairman for the ensuing year.
