(Per ■ Reuter’s Agency.) The Wool Sales. London, March 3. At the wool sales to-day, 8,000 bales were catalogued, making a total of 142,100 submitted at auction since the opening. There was a fair demand for the various lots offered. Earthquake and Loss of Life. Naples, March 7. A severe earthquake has occurred in the Island of Ishkia, situated off the Bay of Naples, and great destruction to property and loss of life has been caused. Fully one hundred persons have perished in the ruins of houses and other buildings. Appointment. Washington, March 5. Mr. Blaine has been appointed United States Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Sugar. Mauritius, Feb. 22. Engagements of sugar comprise at date 1,400 tons for Australia, 685 tons for Tasmania, and none for New Zealand. The market here is dull.
