The third days’ racing of the V.R.C. Autumn Meeting took place this afternoon at Flemington. The Newmarket Handicap, three-quarters of a mile, was won by Aspen easily in xmin Waterford was second and Terrific third. Twenty-seven horses started, and it was a very pretty race. The Town Plate was won by Grand Flaneur, with Sweatmeat second and Progress third. Blown Up. Melbourne, To-day.
As the turret ship Cerberus was practising yesterday afternoon, in Port Phillip, one of her gigs which was out was suddenly blown up by a torpedo. Five men were blown to atoms, but one escaped. Cricket. Sydney, March 5. The cricket match between the Australian team and a Combined Eleven of New South Wales and Victoria was resumed to day. The Australians in their first innings were all disposed of for 155, being 42 runs less than the total of their opponents’ first innings. Murdoch with 65 and Blackham with 36, both bowled, were the highest scorers for the Australians. The combined team went to the wickets Tor their second innings, but play was stopped byj|the inclemency of the weather, when they had put together 74 runs for two wickets. Massie was bowled for 50. Earl Kimberley, the Secretary for State for the Colonies, has telegraphed to the Governor, declining with thanks 1 the offer made by a number of volunteers of this city to proceed to the Cape for service against the Boers.
