There was a vexatious lot of fiddling at the post, mainly owing to the vagaries of The Governor and Sir Modred. Volunteer, who had the position next the rails, On Dit, and Fishhook, stood very quiet, but the rest proved a little troublesome. The flag at last fell to an excellent start, but Lady Emma was the quickest an her feet, and darting across the course, took the inside place, and led past the stand. A length behind her came On Dit, with Sylvanus and the

Governor close up, Sir Modred fifth, Fishhook next, and Volunteer last. As they went away round to the far side the whole field spread out in single file, with a clear gap between each, but in the positions above noted. Coming to the stand for the second time the Zetland spots were still in the van. On Dit and Sylvanus in their same order, Governor and Sir Modred side by side, close up, Fishhook still sixth, and Volunteer tailing off. At a mile and a half On Dit was let out, and rapidly overhauled Lady Emma, the pair then being five or sixth lengths in front of the Governor. Almost immediately Harris called on Sir Modred, and the favorite came like a flash of lightning, and passing the Governor as if he were standing still, got on terms with Lady Emma and On Dit before, reaching the straight. It was then soon all over, for the whip was pulled out to the mare, while Sir Modred was untouched, and the latter, easily shaking off all On Dit’a efforts to get up, won a most interesting race by three-quarters of a length. Sylvanus, who had emulated

Sir Modred’s example of passing The Governor, was just beaten on the post for third piece. Lady Emma was fifth, Fishhook limped in sixth, and Volunteer, who pulled up at the distance post, walked in with the crowd. Time, 4mins 2secs. Sir Modred’s victory was the most popular ever seen in the Dunedin Cup, the cheering for the horse and owner being tremendous. This is the first time that the Dundin Cup has been won by an Otago owner, and the enthusiasm, therefore, was immense.

Selling Race of 40 sovs—l£ miles. Huntingdon, Sir William, and Little Fraud ran a dead heat, the other starters being Boughleen Dhoun, Playboy, Fenian, and Swede. Betting—2 to 1 agst Huntingdon, 3 to 1 Playboy, 5 -to 1 Boughleen Dhoun, 7to 1 any other. This proved a magnificent race. After a straggling start, Little Fraud and Sir William forced the running, and led for nearly all the distance, Boughleen Dhoun following them closely, the favourite lying a good way back. After a mile had been covered, Huntingdon commenced to go up, but Little Fraud and Sir William kept pegging away, and a lashing struggle up the straight resulted in Huntingdon getting le %-el with them only in the last stride, the judge’s verdict being a dead heat of three. Time —2min 53sec. A good race was run off between the three, and Huntingdon won by a couple of lengths, with Little Fraud second.

Publicans’ Handicap of 80 sovs—One mile and a quarter. Hilarious, Goldsborough—Maritana, 7st 11b, 1; Natetor, Bst 121 b, 2 ; Sir Modred Bst 111 b, 3 ; Nautilus, 6st, also ran. Hilarious led from start to finish, winning by a length in 2min 18sec. Maiden Plate of 60 sovs—One mile and a half. Sir Garnet, 3 yrs, Bst 11b, 1 ; Cassivelaunus filly, 3yrs, 7st 121 b, 2 ; Miss King, aged, 9st 31b, 3 ; Hippona, 3yrs, 7st 131 b, and Morpheus, 3yrs, Bst 111 b, also ran.
