NEW ZEALAND

(Per Press Association.) The Te Aroha Murder. Grahamsiown, To day. Procoffy, the man accused of committing the Te Aroha murder, is looking well. He eats well, and is not at all down-cast. Great indignation has been caused by the Resident Magistrate refusing him an interpreter to confer with Mr Brassey, his solicitor. The action of the R.M. is considered arbitrary in the extreme, and the Russian Consul in Auckland has been telegraphed to and acquainted with Mr Kenrick’s refusal of the application for an interpreter. It is considered here to be unfair to the prisoner that Mr Kenrick, who was coroner at the inquest on the body of the murdered man, should sit as R.M. on the case, which comes on to-morrow. Considerable sympathy is felt for the accused. Two Months. Wellington, To-day. Styles for assaulting the ex-magistrate, yesterday, was sentenced to two months’ hard labor. Fire. i Palmerston North, To-day. A fire broke out about two o’clock this morning in a shop and dwelling in Broad street, the property of a man named Goodison. The building was totally destroyed. Young Goodison is one of the original prospectors of the Fitzherbert reef, and as the premises were unoccupied, they were used last night for the purpose of burning some quartz. Goodison left at ten o’clock, when all appeared to be right. The premises were insured in the South Brittish for LIOO. Quashed. Dunedin, To-day. His Honor Judge Ward quashed the conviction of Pnilip M‘Car thy, for illicit distillation at Waihemo.
