SHIPPING.

PORT OF LYTTELTON. Arrived. To-day. Wakatipu, s.s., from Sydney, via Wellington. Penguin, s s., from Port Chalmers. Rotdmahana, s.s., from Wellington. Sailed. Yesterday. Tui, s.s., for Kaikoura. Oreti, s. s., for Timaru and South. To-day. Rotomahana, s.s, for Melbourne, via the South. The Observer (Auckland) is responsible for the following ;— ‘ ‘As the Waitaki, bound for Wangarei, was rounding the North Head, the passengers were surprised by the engines suddenly stopping. Going o~i deck they saw the light of a vessel apparently coming straight towards them. This eventually proved to be the Government steamer Stella, which, on coming close, ran deliberately across the bows of the Waitaki. But for the care exercised by Captain Edie a collision would most certainly have eventuated. He (Captain Edie) shouted, *’ Where the d are you going ?” but no reply came from the Stella. Now the question arises, ought this sort of thing to pass unnoticed, and why don’t Captain Edie report the Stella ?” SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Auckland, Yesterday. Sailed—lsabella Pratt, for Oamaru ; Dunloe for London, with a cargo of gum and wool Napier, Yesterday. Arrived—The New Zealand Shipping Company’s barque Mercia, from London. On November 20th, after a heavy gale, two men fell overboard and were lost, though the vessel was put about and every effort made to save them. In the gale the main top-gallant mast was lost and other damage received. She brings 1,200 tons of cargo for Napier and 200 for Timaru. Wellington, Yesterday. Arrived —Star of the South, from the South ; Zior and Aurora, schooners, from the South. Sailed—Hawea, for Picton and Nelson ; Stella, for Southern lighthouses. Port Chalmers, Yesterday. Arrived—Romeo, barque, from New York; Acacia, from Hobart; Annabell, from Mauritius.
