CONTRACTS FOB, RAILWAY STORES. —lt IB said that desirable alterations have been made by the Minister of Public Works in contracts for railway stores. Drunk in a Railway Carriage.— Constable Rowse brought up a man from Rakaia who had been found drunk in a railway carriage yesterday. The Magistrate fined him ss. A Defaulting Secretary.—At the Magistrate’s Court, Christchurch, this morning, Theophilus Y. Whitmore, late secretary to the Working Men’s Club, was sentenced to six months’ hard labor for embezzling various sums of money, the property of the Club. An Enterprising Firm. —Messrs. A. and F. Pears, the well-known soap manufacturers, have offered the Government to print gratis the whole of the forms required in taking the forthcoming census returns, with permission to have the advertisement of “ Pears’ Soap” on the back. About 8,000,000 forms will be required.
