AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN V. CANTERBURY FIFTEEN. Fiest Day—Saturday, Jan. 29. [From our Special Reporter] Christchurch, Saturday. [The following appeared in an “extra” issued by us on Saturday night:—] The Australians commenced their innings at 4.15 P-m. Spoffbrth and Groube going to the wickets to the bowling of C. Frith and Fuller, Fowler taking the wickets. Frith commenced the bowling, Groube sending his second ball to leg for 3, and the next Spoffbrth cut for 3. The next went to leg for 2 for Groube. Fuller’s second ball clean bowled Spoffbrth. I—3—B. Murdoch then joined Groube. Runs then came freely, the fielding not being of the best. When 30 was up on telegraph W. Frith relieved Fuller at the southern end of the ground, Fuller taking C. Frith’s place next over. At five o’clock Murdoch hit Fuller for 4, which brought 40 up on the board. When 50 had gone up Beard took the ball from Fuller, but the batsmen seemed inseparable, and runs came steadily. With the score at 67, C. Frith took the bowling again, relieving Beard. Still the two men kept scoring. Groube was at last caught by W. Frith at midoff off C. Frith, after having played a fine innings of 42, without having given a chance. 82 —2 —42. Macdonald then joined his captain, and, making 7, was caught by Fowler, at the wickets, off Frith. Time was then called, Murdoch being not out for 43. 3 7 —95The following are the scores : Canterbury Fifteen. Ist Innings.
