TOWN EDITION. [lssued at 5 p.m.] The Ashburton Guardian. FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, 1881. Fresh Butter for England.
An item of great importance to the farmers appears in our cablegrams today. It is an announcement that the consignment of butter, which was sent with i.he frozen .meat in the steamer Protos to England, has been opened ’arid'found to be in excellent condition. For a time it was doubtful whether the butter cargo had remained sound during tHe voyage, arid our cablegrams told us that these doubts existed. It is now with great satisfaction that we learn the butter has turned out well, as the success of the experiment opens up another outlet for JJew Zealand produce as soon as our colony is in a position to take advantage of it. The meat, we have already been told, arrived perfectly sound, and no better evidence of the popularity of the meat in England can be adduced than the fact that it is all bought wholesale
by the London not a pound of it can bd obtained in the shops. The London butchers sell it as the best Knglish-fed meat; for which it readily passes, and thus the price is maintained. We do hope that colonists will turn their attention to instituting a frozen meat trade between New Zealand and England, for now that beef, mutton, pork, and butter can be delivered fresh in England, and the commodities are popular in the market, a profitable and more reliable trade than grain is opened to us.
