SYMPATHY.

To THE EDITOR. Sir, —The letter you kindly inserted last week respecting the late Matthew Petty appears to have awakened considerable interest amongst the inhabitants of this district, and I beg to inform you that Mr. Thomas Struthers has nobly manifested his sympathy in a very practical manner, by canvassing the town for subscriptions towards the expense of the funeral of the said young man ; and, notwith standing the dullness of the times, the appeals of Mr. Struthers have been most liberally responded to. This mornhe brought mo the sum of Ll 3 7s. (3d., and, judging from the number of names on the list, Mr. Struthers has evidently been most indefatigable in his efforts to collect so much money, and deserres very great praise. The sympathy felt must have been very general, for men of nearly all classes have freely and willingly contributed; This is a strong proof chat the people of Ashburton know how to be generous when occasion demands it. I am requested to heartily thank the public through the medium of your paper for the prompt and substantial help they have, rendered, and am pleased to state that arfter all funeral expenses are settled there will bo a few pounds remaining, which will be immediately handed over to the sorrwing father. —I am, A'., A. J. Smith.
