General Sir Donald Stewart, who commanded the British army in Cabul will shortly succeed General Sir Frederick Haines as Commander-in-chief in India. . An Intended MassacreBombay, Jan. 11. News has been received here that a plot has been discovered among the Natives of Kolapore, a town in the south of this presidency, to assassinate all European residents in the place. Owing to the detection of the conspiracy danger was averted, and a number of arrests have been made of the would-be assassins. The French Municipal Elections. ; Paris, Jan. 11. The French municipal elections, which have just concluded, show a considerable majority to the republicans. • A Delayed Marriage. , Vienna, Jan. 10. The marriage which was arranged to take place next month between the .Grown Prince Rudolph, of Austria, and the Princess Stephanie, has been postponed.

All efforts to subdue the flames were fruitless, and Mr. Beckett, who ordinarily slept on the premises, as he cannot now be heard of, is feared to have perished in the fire. Wool and Grain. Melbourne, Jan. 10. Sir Samuel Wilson takes the champion prize for wool at the Exhibition. The show of grain and agricultural produce at the Exhibition opens on the 23rd February. Delegates for the Conference. Jan. 11. Tire South Australian, West Australian, Tasmanian, and Victorian delegates to the Intercolonial Conference leave Melbourne to-morrow for Sydney. The Hereford a Total Wreck. Melbourne, To-day. All hope of saving the Hereford has been abandoned. There are now thirteen feet of water in her hold. The Australian Cricketers. The Australian cricketers were passengers for New Zealand by the Ringarooma, which sailed yesterday. The Late Massacre. CookxowN, Jan. 6. Further news to hand confirms the information received yesterday of the massacre of the Chinese crew of the schooner Prosperity ‘ by the natives of Lowde Island, and states that the bodies were smoke dried, and the heads sent to- the various villiages.

The Supreme Court to-day, refused to allow costs to Albert Park, who took an injunction against the Corporation' to restrain Cole’s circus from performing on the Albert Reserve. The New Zealand Insurance Company. At the fortieth half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Insurance Company today, the Directors’ report for the halfyear ended, November 30, 1880, showed that after making provision for all ascertained uses, and carrying LIO,OOO to the reserve .fund, now stands, at LI 50,000, there remains a sum of L 21,, 87 2s. 3d. for division, which the directors propose to be appropriated as follows : —Dividend at the late of 15 per cent, per annum, L 15,000 ; balance carried forward, L 6,797. The Mail Steamer. There is no sign as yet of the mail steamer. Mr. Ivess Again Sells Out. Mr. C. O. Montrose has concluded negotions for the purchase of the Waikato Mail, published at Cambridge.
