The Great Powers still continue to urge Turkey and Greece to agree to European arbitration on the frontier question, but a favorable result is not, so far, expected to be arrived at. The Fenians Again, London, Jan. 4. Owing to the tumor of an intended Fenian raid on the armories of the Volunteer Corps in England, the authorities at the War Office have ordered precautions to be taken at the headquarters of the various corps with a view to prevent the success of any attack on the armories. A Torpedo on a Man-of-War. A report has gained general currency here to-day that a torpedo has been found to have been placed under the bow of Her Majesty’s ship Lord Warden, which is lying in the Firth of Forth, on the east coast of Scotland. The alleged act is attributed to Fenians, No official confirmation of the rumor has been obtained. Basutoland. Capetown, Jan. 4. News has been received from Basutoland that a patrolling force of the Cape Rifles, under Colonel Carrington, has
safely returned to., camp at Maft-dng, after having come up with a convoy of provisions, arms, arid ammunition which had been despatched from head-quar-ters for the use of the garrison. The arrival of the . convoy has materially strengthened Colonel Carrington’s position. Further news to hand shows that recent defeats of Basutos, Pendonies, and Tambookies by Colonial troops have had good effect on other tribes. Teinbers, who had also joined in rebellion, are now yielding, large number of the tribes having recently submitted to the Cape forces, which were operating against them. --
