Chatmoss v. The Ashburton Muffs,
The above match which, was conducted throughout on most primitive principles, concluded yesterday afternoon. In their second innings the Chatmoss team completely demoralised their opponents, who were in the field, and some of the Mufls will have cause for the next few days to have painful recollections of their experiences in leather-hunting. As will be seen by the appended scores, the visitors were not disposed of until they had totaled up 142 runs, leaving the Muffs 102 to get to obtain a victory over their plucky opponents. Notwithstanding this formidable array of figures, the Ashburtoniaus were not diV.ieartened, but, despite their best efforts, they had to succumb to a defeat, which we need not assure our readers was taken in the best possible spirit. In fact, it. would be difficult to say which team went home most satisfied with the day’s sport, the victors or the vanquished. The players were so well satisfied with their day’s fun that it is understood the match istobc.au .annual institution in future. The following are the scores made in the second innings :—•
Borough v. County Second Eleven.
The Borough Club tried conclusions today with the County Second Eleven. Want of systematic practice told somewhat on the play of the young club, which has been but a short in existence, and they only got rid of their opponents when the County had scored 161, and that playing two men short. Assuming the bat the Borough men got together, or rather three of them did with the extras, 30 runs, quite a necklace of eggs hanging down from the double figures at the top of the scoring sheet. In these circumstances the Borough men “ followed on.”
