CRICKET.
Chatmoss v. The Ashburton Muffs. The return match between the Chatmoss Club and the Ashburton Muffs took place on the Cricket Club’s ground, in the Domain to-day. On the conclusion of the first innings the combatants left cricket to play with knives and forks, and they played fearful havoc with the good things supplied by Mr. T. Hicks. After demolishing a few lambs, hams, and bullocks, in the shape of comestibles, and the contents of several portly jars of nectar. Mr. C. W. Ireland, in a short and pithy speech, referred to the pleasant day the Muffs had spent at Chatmoss on the occasion of the previous match, .and the hospitable manner in which they had been entertained. He proposed the health of Mr. James Scott, coupled with the Chatmoss team. The toast.being drunk with tremendous applause and musical honors, Messrs. Scott and Grant, who appeared to be much affected, returned thanks, and the team then resumed the more legitimate part of the day’s work—leatherhunting.
