CORONER’S INQUESTS.
To the Editor.
Sir— Your leader in yesterday’s paper, I honestly believe expresses the opinion of the general public, relative to holding unnecessary inquests in cases of death from natural causes, which I observe has been practised here to an unlimited extent —the result of which has been, first, sad and painful feelings to the relatives of the deceased, subjected to such unnecessary investigations ; secondly, the inconvenience and annoyance to jurors summoned to attend for no real reason ; and thirdly, a professional fee paid to the coroner, who is also a medical surgeon, whose usefulness would be greater were he not coroner. I think the time has arrived when a general meeting of the inhabitants should be held to request our representatives to demand that the R.M. of the district should be appointed coroner, at a fixed yearly salary, which granted, I honestly believe would prevent half the inquests being held that are now.—l am, «fec., , A Juryman.
