TOWN EDITION. [lssued at 5 p.m.] The Ashburton Guardian. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1880. The Borough Funds.
The Mayor’s financing has been successful, and in, a short time, Ashburton Borough will have at its command some with which to do up the outfall drain with concrete, and available for other works. The control of the water-pipes which the County has handed over to the Borough with a light and easily fulfilled condition has brought about this pleasant state of affairs, and the result is that all the money we have mentioned above will be at 'the disposal of the Borough without touching next year’s rates. Already the members of the Borough Council find their hearts expanding, and : ive expect that Councillor Harrison wiU be in a position to carry his asphalt motion without any opposition whatever. The asphalting of East street footpaths is a work that all the residents will be glad to see carried out, and the next desirable piece of work to be undertaken should be the completion of the concrete channelling. There are several side streets in the town 1 where water from the reservoir is flowing over the raw soil, and the primitive channel is not very pleasant, .being only too liable to obstruction, with a consequent spreading of the water over parts of the street. To the completion of the channels the Council stand committed, and we hope they will at once see to the redeeming of their pledge. The Mayor and Council leseryelhe congratulations of the residents on the satisfactory condition in which the Borough fianance is now placed, and the return of Mr. Hugo Friedlander to the Mayoralty unopposed is a graceful acknowledgment of the services in the matter of finance he has rendered to the town.
