(Per Press Asoociatibn.) Auckland, Nov. 10. ' Five specimens from Te Aioha, estimated to yield 10 ounces to the pound, have been lodged in town. Art. The Auckland Society of Artists hold an Exhibition in March next. The Lord Mayor of London. Messrs. Macarthur and Co. gave a grand banquet last evening to celebrate the installation of Alderman Macarthur, the head of the firm, as Lord Mayor of London. Nearly 200 people were present. Amongst the guests were Bishop Cowie, the Attorney-General, Sir M. O’Rorke, and several members of the House of Representatives. Councillor, Waddell, the acting Mayor, proposed the health of the Lord Mayor of London ; and Mr. McMillan, his nephew, in responding, said Mr. Macarthur is the first Irishman elected Lord Mayor of London. The toast : of the New Zealand Ministry was responded to by Mr. Whitaker, who said that general retrenchment and nonborrowing must be the policy of the country for some time to come. He was positively ashamed to hear the word “ repudiation.” He had been 40 years in the colony, and felt convinced that, notwithstanding croaking, the colonyisiu a position to meet its obligations. Sir M. O’Rorke, in replying to the toast of the House of Representatives, did not believe the colony would reel under its burden, though Jre trench ment pressed hardly on individuals. He was glad to say there was no necessity for imposing fresh restrictions on the debates of [the House, the forms existing at Home being sufficient. Bishop Cowie, in his speech, advocated the establishment of a society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. Smuggling. Wellington, To-day.

At the Magistrates’ Court a charge against the captain and steward of the ship St. Leonards for being concerned in the recent smuggling case was heard. The steward was fined L 25. and the charge against the captain was dismissed. The Australian Cricketers and New Zealand. Dunedin, To-day. A gentleman in town has received a letter from Mr. Alexander, stating that the Australian team are anxious to visit New Zealand, playing two or-three days in each of the principal towns. If suitable terms can be arranged, their leave will be extended.
