The time for the election of Mayor draws near, but as yet its approach is not signalled by any very great activity on the part of those who are usually to the front at electioneering. Only one candidate is mentioned in con-

nection with the office, and he is the gentleman who at present, holds the seat. We have heard no other likely man named. Mr. Hugo Friedlander gained the seat last year in a stiff election, and during his term he has shown great interest in the Borough’s welfare. In fact, it is to his energy and tact the town owes its present passably good financial prospects. By his instrumentality mainly, the lost subsidy has been as good as recovered, and to his agency we can also attribute the recovery of the Borough’s share of the impounded land, the chances of securing which had dwindled down to a very small thing indeed, seeing that, by the division of the Road Board, kings had arisen who knew not Joseph, and the Borough appeared likely to meet rough treatment at their hands. The Mayor, however, by persistently importuning the County Council on the subject, has succeeded in obtaining justice, and what Mr. Wright was pleased to call a “ chronic grievance ” lias now been removed, or will be very shortly. We do not know that the ratepayers can do better than accept Mr. Friedlander’s services for another term, if they can be secured, for he has now been sufficiently long in office to know all the affairs : of the Borough well ; and his business tact is as much wanted as ever in the present state of the Borough’s work. Funds are not too rife, and what money is possessed wants judicious spending. To aid this we think Mr. Hugo Friedlander is a powerful auxiliary, as the history of his term abundantly proves. We have not yet heard whether he has consented to place his services at the ratepayers’ disposal; but we know a requisition is in course of signature, and will be presented to him shortly, if he has not already received it. ;
