(Per Press Asoociation.) A Tailors’ Trades .-Union. Auckland, To-day. The Tailors’ Society met last evening, and fixed the rate of wages at a shilling an hour. They fixed the working hours at from 8 to 6, with an hour for dinner, and passed a rule that no journeyman be allowed to take work home to be done in his leisure hours. The Waikato Obstruction. Latest news from Waikato in reference to the native obstructions at Horohoro, states that one old Maori fanatic, with half a dozen old women to help, threatened dreadful things, but it means nothing. It would have been more serious had not the Cambridge troops been at hand. New Caledonia. Latest news from New Caledonia states that Fradio, the rebel chief, has been captured. He was concerned in the massacre of the Frigoott family. A Blaze. Napier, To-day. A fire broke out at half past twelve o’clock last night at the top end of Hastings street, opposite Swan’s brewery. The flames quickly communicated with the buildings on either side. Owing to the drainage works cutting up the road, the steam fire engine was delayed, and the manual engine, though soon on the spot, was unable to keep the fire down. Three dwellings occupied respectively by Messrs. Redstone, Role, and Davidson, were destroyed. The insurances are all in. the Union, and ai’e—L2OO on Redstone’s house ; L2OO on Role’s house, L 25 on his workshop, and L 25 on his tools. Davidson’s policy had lapsed. Ah Lee’s Sentence. Wellington, To-day. The Executive yesterday considered a further representation from the Bishop of Dunedin regarding Ah Lee, and decided that no grounds had been shown why the sentence of death should not be carried out. A Lawyer in Trouble. The Chief Justice has directed of the Law Society to the case of Madden, a solicitor at Rangitikei, whom it was recently moved to strike off the rolls. He is still practisng without taking out a certificate. The Chief Justice said if the Law Society did not take action he should direct the Register to make a motion to have Madden committed for a contempt, ■
