Burning of the Timaru Mechanics’ Institute.

Timabu, To-day. The Mechanics’ Institute, valued at L 3,000, was totally destroyed by fire last night. The fire, broke out shortly after ten o’clock ; in a few minutes the whole building was in flames, and by 11 o’clock it was destroyed. Part of it was of old dry wood. All the books and furniture were saved. The Church of England bazaar authorities had luckily cleared all the balance of their goods out, except about L2O worth. There is no clue as to the origin of the fire, which broke out in the back, or- stage part, which was locked up at 7p. in. Several adjoining buildings were in great danger for some time, but the Court-house next door, being of concrete, did not suffer. The insurances are reported to be £650 in the South British, £660 in the Liverpool, London and Globe, and £OSO divided between, the Transatlantic and Victoria Companies*
