Fresh Taxation Proposed to meet

Deficiencies

(By cable, from Reuter's Agency.) Melbourne, Wednesday.

Mr. Berry haa introduced hia Budget in the Assembly last night. He showed that the revenue for the past financial year amounted to L 4,673,000, being L 654,000 below the estimate. The expenditure for the year was L 5,063,000. The actual deficiencies at the close of the year were L 390,000, exclusive of L 200,000 due on railway liquidation account. The revenue shows the greatest decrease in customs, in land, and in the public and postal services. Mr. Berry estimates the revenue for the current financial year at L 4,910,000, and expenditure at L 5,130,000, and proposes new taxes on grain and maize of sixpence to oneshillingpercental,yielding L 18,000; on oils, sixpence per gallon, yielding L 10.500; on beer twopence per gallon, yielding L 60,000 ; on imported tobacco, two shillings to three per pound, yielding LIB,OOO ; and on colonial tobacco, a tax of one shilling per pound, yielding L 15,000. These new taxes, including revenue from land sales, are expected to realise L 156,000.
