Mata is now being backed at 10 to 1 for the Cup, having bad a splendid gallop to-day. * ‘Augur,” in his Spurting Notes, has selected Progress and Mata for the Cup.

The Postal Conference, Melbourne, Oct. 22.

The proposed conference on postal matters has fallen through, the various colonies invited to join in the same having declined the proposal. It is probable, however, that a conference of the Australian colonies will be held on the subject of border duties.

Invercargill, Oct. 22.

During the past month 1,347,850 feet of timber was cut in the sawmills here, the royalty on which amounted to LIGB.

Prison Labor.

Government have forwarded a circular to the gaols, intimating that prison labor is to be let to the Corporation or indi viduals at three-quarters of the current rate of daily wages. An Alleged Wife Deserber Intercepted. William Henry Burton, the well-known coach proprietor of Canterbury and the West Coast, was before the Magistrate this morning, charged with wife desertion. He was apprehended on the strength of a telegram from Christchurch. He was a passenger to the Melbourne Exhibition per the Arawata. Prisoner was remanded, but has since been released for want of evidence. Torn by an Oat Oruslier. A boy at Wyndham got his fingers caught in an oat crusher. The fingers were crushed to a jelly, and the flesh torn from the arm.
