Another Timaru Romance.
The South Canterbury Times says : —A nice kettle of fish is in preparation for the Resident Magistrate. It is stated that an old and respected tradesman, finding himself in difficulties, and fearing the remorseless creditor, tried the expedient of sailing under false colors. The canny Scot allied himself with an astute Teuton, and removing his domicile from the suburbs, he appeared in the city under an unpronounceable name. Unfortunately ho speedily found out that in getting out of the fry-ing-pan he readied the fire—in other words that German astuteness was one too many for Caledonian caution. Not content with taking possession of the old man’s goods and chattels, the partner with the unpronounceable name, although a married individual with a wife and family around him, is stated to have abused the trust and confidence of his friend by stealing the affections of a young, innocent, and attractive daughter. The partnership, if such it may be termed, has been abruptly dissolved, and an exceedingly entangled skein full of sad domestic and commercial knotty points will probably exercise the unravelling capabilities of Mr. Bectham.
