s {Per Reuter's Agency.) Melbourne, Sept. 29. In the Legislative Council last night Mr. Cuthbert moved a motion for a conference of the two Houses in x-efcrence to the paj'ment of members. Mr. Read, representing the Government, opposed the motion, but it was carried by eighteen to five. The Council are willing to pass the payment to members of the Assembly, but not to those of the Upper House. Sir William and Lady Jervois and suite have arrived here from South Australia, Kino George’s Sound, Sept. 29. The P. and O. Company’s steamship Hydaspes, with the inward Suez mail, has arrived here. Brisbane,. Sept 30. In the Legislative Assembly last night the Colonial Treasurer moved the second reading of a Bill to authorise the construction of Railways under the land grant system. The measure provides for a grant ■ of 800 acres per mile of line constructed in alternate blocks, the line to remain the property of the constructors. It is stated that if the Bill passes a line of railway • will be constructed to the Gulf of Carpentaria from Roma, which place is already connected by rail with Brisbane.
