THE TEACHERS’ REDUCTIONS.

The rates of the reductions to be made on teachers’ salaries, in pursuance of the retrenchment policy, have been fixed, and are now officially announced, and it will be seen from the scale we give below that the reductions have been graduated, with a view to press as lightly as possible upon the teachers who are in receipt of only small salaries. The scale is as follows : Salaries up to £2O inclusive will not be subjected to any reduction at all. Salaries from £2l to £SO will be reduced 5 per cent. Salaries from £sl to £loo—s per cent, on the first LSO and ten per cent on the remainder ; for example—a salary of £7O will be reduced by £4 10s., being £2 10s. at 5 per cent on £SO, and £2 at 10 per cent, on £2O ; a salary of £BO will similarly be reduced by £5 10s, and so on. Salaries above LIOO will be reduced 10 per cent. Rent allowances will be treated as salary, and bonuses and allowances for instructing pupil teachers will be reduced 10 per cent., while it is also intended to make some alteration with respect to the allowances for teaching music, but this has not yet been decided on. In the case of uncertificated teachers provisionally appointed, the salary will be subject to a further deduction at the rate of about per cent., until a certificate has been obtained. A reduction of ten per cent, has also been made on the incidental expenses, grants to committees. This new scale will come into force on the first of November next.
