(Per Press Association.) Auckland, Sept. 29. At the annual meeting of the Auckland Rowing Club the report showed a balance in hand of Ll 5 ; assets, L 206 ; liabilities, nil. James M'Cosh Clark was elected President. Wellington, Sept. 29. The steamer Manawatu on her passage from Wanganui to Wellington, met with a mishap to her engines. She put into Kapiti and will be towed into Wellington to-morrow. The Magisterial enquiry into alleged illtreatment of a prisoner by two constables commenced this afternoon. The evidence of Edmunds was taken, to the effect that when he was locked up by the constables he complained that his leg was broken, and he alleges the constables took no notice of his complaint, and allowed him to remain in the station all night before being sent to the Hospital. The enquiry was then adjaurned until Friday. A large number of witnesses will be examined. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, T. Kennedy Macdonald was fined L 5 and costs for exercising his business as an auctioneer after seven o’clock at night. The defence was that there was no intention to set the law at defiance, but defendant wished to bring the matter before the Court with a view of getting the law repealed. The Magistrate said the act was a breach of a clearly-defined Ordinance, and cautioned the defendant that, should the offence be repeated, he would inflict the full penalty—Lso. Invercargill, Sept. 29. Owing to the uneasiness caused in the minds of members by the official report as co the unsatisfactory condition of the funds of the friendly societies in the Otago dictricts, the heads of the local lodges of all orders intend to have a thorough investigation with a view to a re-adjustment if necessary.
