POACHERS ON DANGEROUS GROUND.

To the Editor.

Sir, —Most of the press have called the attention of the public to the cases in Dunedin where a number of poor workmen, purchasers of land, were defrauded out of their money in consequence of not having obtained legal assistance in their business. Now, it is well within the knowledge of the profession here that an exactly similar state of things exists. The Legislature has provided means whereby the public may be protected from the unprincipled scoundrels who, for the sake of a few shillings’ illicit gain, have placed a large area of land in this district in such a state that it is extremely dangerous to have anything to do with land. The solicitors, to my knowledge, have cases of the kind under their notice at the present moment, and why do they not take means to protect the public ? I should think the last straw has been placed on the camel’s back, and, I await with some curiosity to see the formidable fraternity move in their own, if not the public cause. —I am, &c., Justice.
