THE BOROUGH STAKES. , BY TELEPHONE. Sporting matters having been dull of late, I have had to keep my pencil quiet, and as there is no prospect of doing an extravaganza over horse racing just now I think I won’t be far wrong if I criticize the performances and pedigrees of the entries for the Borough Stakes.

I find that live nominators have paid up their entrance fees. The first on the. list is an old performer in. the shape of the aged Joe: he is evidently!- a favorite in the stable as the renowned Saint has taken him in hand and I therefore conclude that the pair are intended for double harness ; and 1 think the Saint is imperilling his own chance for first money, as it is known that although Joe has the best breeding, lie can’t compare with the Gig-lamps colt in staying powers. The dark hotting on this stable is two “ fifties ” over. The second on the list, J Orr, who is to be trained by a Sparrow and ridden with a “ Boil,” can’t to my mind be considered as having a say in the stakes: the conqpany is altogether out of his latitude, and I shall at once place him as last in the race. He has no chance against the two fifties. The third nomination—Weynnouth—is one of the right sort, bred from good old English stock, well ribbed up, and game to the backbone. He is perhaps on the big side, but he can always stand a bit of “ threshixig ”to pull the beef off. I place him first or second despite the heavy odds of fifties ; and with Jim Bradley as trainer, I feel inclined to put my money on him to take the premier honors. Make room for the favorite ! ! ! The august St. George is now to be studied. He is bached by the leading, pub.., and the moat prominent Orangeman; his success must therefore be certain, and I would put up No. 1 against his name had it not been that he has made it public that ho hoped to be beaten, so that he would be able to run for the Mayoral Cup in November. No, George, you can’t do it; take my advise and go in for secondary honors in the Council event, and let better cattle try for the privilege of contributing gold links to the Mayoral chain. The Doctor is the last on the list, and will in my opinion occupy the same place in the record of the judge ; the two “ fifties ” are too heavy for him also. He has disappointed the public in the form he has run in several Domain events, and has consequently very little public money bet on him on this occasion.
