THE UNEMPLOYED.
It is not reassuring for the future of the thousands of laborers in this colony that Government are taking precautions. There are a large number of men still in the Government employ at “unemployed” wages, but we had thought their number was being steadily reduced, owing to times improving. . We note, however, that Government have appropriated L 70,000 as provision for the unemployed, and it is intended to disperse labor gangs over the colony at such works as may be convenient. The sum appropriated is sufficiently large to at least find low wages for as many laborers as are likely to accept “ unemployed ” work.
