The Ashburton Guardian, COUNTY AGRICULTURAL & SPORTING RECORDER TUESDAY, AUGUST 24, 1880.

The Borough Council have at last seen fit to adopt a suggestion we made some time ago, and that had been made often before —namely, to enforce the by-law regarding the clearing off of tussock from unoccupied sections. Before they do so, however, they have resolved to set a good example to proprietors _of tussocky sections, and are to call for tenders for stripping their owrJ unoccupied reserves of their “ yellovl -agony.” Mr. St. Hill is a sort of steanl tug to the Council; he is always dragl ging them along with him in some nevl direction of reform, and it is to hinl that we owe the initiation in the Council of the anti-tussock movement. We shall be glad to see the tussock curse rejl pealed, and feel grateful to Mr. Stl Hill fbf thus setting about it. _ Butl while we entertain gratitude to him fol his step and to the Council for followj ing him, and while we heave a sigh on relief tlat a few more days and all| danger , will be removed of conflagra-

tions arising from spontaneous combustion or other untraceable cause amongst the winnowed tussocks, we at the same time, that the wisdom of the Borough Council cannot devise some scheme by which the word “ unoccupied’’\nay be changed to its-opposite, and . dwelling-houses and dwellers therein lake the place of the grass that is to be swept away. One pleasant reflection in the matter, how ever, is that the removal of the tussock will supply a few days’ work at least for some of the laborers about town whose time is anything but fully employed.
