ALFORD FOREST.

" 1 (From our Own Correspondent.) A ball was given last Monday evening, at the Alford Forest Hotel, to celebrate the completion of the bridge over the North Ashburton. Messrs. Thomas and Hill, with their: workmen, together with many of the inhabitants, were present. Dancing commenced at 9 o’clock, to music supplied by Mr. Price and friends. The room was tastefully decorated with ferns, whose beauty contrasted well with that of the many ladies who were present. In the intervals, songs wore given, and in the course of the evening speeches were delivered, praising the rapid completion of the bridge and che solid character of the work, Mr. Thomas, in reply, said, although not great gainers by the contract, they had done their best, .and in every work they felt they were establishing their name in the beat possible manner by carrying out their part of the business conscientiously. He thanked the ladies especially for honoring the occasion with their presence, and Mr. Tisch for the happy manner in which he had made provision for . the affair. A most enjoyable evening was spent, and the party did not separate till rosy morn. A meeting was held in the Main School on the 18th inst. for the purpose of providing a properly fenced site as a burial ground. It was resolved that Mr. A. M'Parlane wait upon the Chief Surveyor, in Christchurch, asking for information, to be laid before the next meeting, on the 28th inst. A daughter of Mr. John McKenzie was buried at Mount Somers on Sunday last, a large concourse of friends showing sympathy by their attendance.
