ELGIN SCHOOL.

The usual monthly meeting of the Elgin School Committee was held on Friday last in the schoolroom. Present— Messrs. J. Stanley Bruce (Chairman), Henry Moffat, P. limes, and John Keir. The Chairman’s statement was as follows ;—I have to congratulate you upon the great success of your school. Although it has been open but a few weeks there are already forty-five children on the register, which is more than could be expected at the start and during the winter months. I have further to congratulate you on thesuccessfulentertainmentheld on opening the schoolhouse, which netted L 7 7s. (id., and at which there wore fortythree children admitted free. I have also to state that the Government have established a postofß.ee at the schoolhouse, but without allowing any remuneration to the post-master, but Mr. Proudlock has most kindly consented to his services gratuitously. The Board of Education have accepted Messrs. Sealy Bros.’ tender for planting, &c., for L 7 10s., and appointed Mrs. Proudlock as sewing mistress. The correspondence was next read, being principally with the Board of Education, relative to planting site, appointmentment of sewing mistress, clock for schoolhouse, globe, &c. Mr. Henry Moffat proposed, and Mr. P. Innes seconded—“ That the Committee, on behalf' of the district, propose a vote of thanks to Mr. Proudlock for agreeing to act as postmaster without remuneration.” Carried.

The accounts before the meeting, amounting to Ll 9 lls. fid., were then passed for payment, and the Committee adjourned to Wednesday, the 3rd Sep: tember.)
