THE COUNTY WATERWORKS BILL.
The Ashburton County Waterworks Bill passed the Lower House on Wednesday, and has advanced its first stage in the Upper House. The borrowing powers of the County under the Bill has been reduced to L 50,000, and on the motion for the passing of the Bill, Mr. Hurst, one of the members for Auckland raised a somewhat vigorous protest against the borrowing powers it contained, saying that the Legislature had avowed their intention of permitting no further borrowing. Sir George Grey took occasion to banter Mr. Hall on the financial crisis and the economical fit Government and the House had taken, and asked if in view of the financial crisis Government meant to bring in a Bill to prevent private persons from borrowing. The Premier evidently became a little nettled at this, for we find, him replying that had it not been for the Grey Government there would have been no financial crisis, and the economical fit would have been unnecessary.
