In the Lfflwer House the Ministry maintained that the notification of the vote of want of confidence was out of order before the Governor’s speech.: ■ The Speaker ruled to the contrary, arid the Ministry quitted the House. The motion was ultimately parried. ;. " ■ Melbourne, July 24 The Age to-day withdraws its statement (in consequence of which a libel action had been instituted) to the effect that Messrs. Swallow and Ariel had influenced their workmen at the elections, and apologises to that firm for ipade such a 'statement.' Springwater won the Waterloo Cup. A terrible tragedy took place at the Opera House on Saturday. A young Irishman named Greer shot his wife, and a Frenchman named Soudrey, afterwards shooting himself. It is supposed to be caused through jealousy of Soudrey.; They are all dangerously wounded, ; Greer mortally. July 26. It is stated that Mr. Mclntyre, who was a candidate for Sandhurst in the Ministerial interest at the late election, intends suing the Age for LSOOO damages for saying he was bought over by Government, who gave his son an appointment.

An extensive fire broke out in George street at midnight. Gordon and Gotch’a and other premises were totally destroyed. The loss is estimated at LIO,OOO. The insurances on the buildings are heavy. Sydney, July 26. The insurances on the George street fire include LI,OOO in the New Zealand Insurance Company. Baker’s, property, photographers, next to Gordon and Gotch’s, was also destroyed by fire. Adelaide, June 23. Adelaide wheat, 4s. per bushel, market steady ; flour, L 9 155., market inactive.
