R.M. Court, Eakaia. —Owing to the absence of the Resident Magistrate the Court at Rakaia was ad journo i till Thursday next 15th inst. The Borough Election. Messrs. Harrison and Quill are the only persons who have been nominated to till the vacancy in the Borough Council, caused by the resignation of Mr. Edward Saunders. A poll will be taken on Wednesday, 21st July., Cattle Stealing. —The now notorious Graham Flowers, accused of cattle stealing, was tried before the Supreme Court, Christchurch, on Thursday, and was found “ Guilty.” His Honor sentenced the prisoner to penal servitude for three years, saying the case was one of the most flagrant instances-of cattle ■ stealing he had ever met with'. The Other Side. —At the R.M. Court on Tuesday last Sergeant Felton stated that a man named Addison had gone to the police station the night previous with a most pitiful tale regarding hia inability to obtain work, and his consequent destitute state. Addison appeared before the Bench under no.-.specific charge, and the Sergeant asked that the man might be remanded so that inquiries could he made as to his character. Yesteaday Addison was again brought up, when Sergeant Felton stated that the accused was well known to the police at Tornuka, who had reported that Addison had recently spent LlOatan hotel there, the amount of a remittance he had received: from home. He was known as a confirmed drunkard, and spent most of his time loafing about hotels. Upon such evidence his Worship sentenced the accused to fourteen days imprisonment.
