SUPREME COURT SITTINGS.
[By Telegraph.] Auckland, July 5. The Supremo Court sittings commenced thip morning before Judge Richmond. There are twenty-six names on the calendar, against which thirty-three charges are made. The majority of cases are of an ordinary description, but there are one or two notable ones, including a charge of embracery against Samuel Ooombes. There are seven charges of forging and uttering, and two more of an analogous character. The Judge, in his charge, deplored the readiness with which publicans supply blank cheques, it being only necessary for a man to get a nobbier to obtain a blank form. With regard to the embracery case, his Honor said the law looked with extreme jealonsy on any attempts to influence a jury. Wellington, July 5. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened this morning. The Chief Justice, in his charge to the' Grand Jury, said that the calendar was an average onej and briefly referred to the cases. A charge against Gen. Bickerstaff, for larceny, is proceeding. A true bill was found against Thomas Williams, for larceny.
Bickerstaff has been sentenced to twelve months’, and Williams .to eighteen months’ imprisonment. A true bill was brought in against Robert Littleijott for injury to property at the Eosideht Magistrate’s Court. ' Patrick Re ary was sentenced to twelve months’ hard labor. J. T. Thompson, on two charges of forgery, was found guilty and remanded for sentence. The bill against Devereaux for arson, was thrown out. In all the other cases true bils were found. Dunedin, July 5. The Judge’s charge was merely a congratulation to the jury, on the lightness of the calender. George Joseph Alexander pleaded guilty to a charge of larceny and got six months. The Grand Jury threw out the bill against Mrs. Fergusson, for child abandonment. The Crown declined to give evidence against William Roberts, for forcible entry, and John Thomson, for breach of Arms Act.
