THE NO-CONFIDENCE DEBATE.
No one ever doubted that the result of the no-conficlonce debate would be other than a victory for Government, but not everybody expected that the majority would reach fifteen, and that in a House of Representatives numbering eightyeight members. The division took place on Thursday, and the figures were fortyfive for, thirty agsinst Government. The victory, which was always sure, only goes to show by its decisive character how thoroughly Ministers are supported by the independent members, and how the Liberal and progressive policy adopted has met the sanction of all the thinking men in the House whose political vision has not received an oblique cast by party feeling. The last trial of strength between the party in power and the present Opposition was only decided by the votes of the celebrated Auckland four, whose secession from Greyism saved the colony from a continuance of the disastrous regime under which the colony suffered, but the division above reported shows how strong Government have become since then, and how in proportion tho Oppoisition have weakened. Tho continuance in power, for this session at least, of the Hall Government is thus assured.
