“Wellington, Juno 23.
Mr. Macandrew was expected to speak this afternoon on the financial debate, but an unexpected discussion on the Civil Service Commission prevented him doing so. Notwithstanding this, the Chronicle came out about 4 p.m. with the following criticism of the speech : “ Mr. Macandrew resumed the no-confidence debate this afternoon. His speech, though by no means brilliant, brisflcd with hard, unassailable facts, which damaged the Government very seriously” ! ! This shows that a stock of cut and dry compliments is kept in the Chronicle office for its own party', as its coarse, indiscriminate abuse is always in readiness for its opponents.
There is a great inclination on the part of all the real Liberals in the House to get rid of Sir George Grey, as there arc few who do not now see that he is the great obstacle to anything really Liberal. His speech in the present no-confidence debate was a lamentable exhibition.
