The reportof tie Committee was negatived, as was also an amendment by Mr Stuart to the effect that if more revenue was required from a property tax to meei the temporary crisis, the present land tax should bo increased for a period of two years. After a long discussion it was agreed to recommend that the increase of revenue should be raised on the following articles : —Beer, soft goods, hardware, boots and shoes, jewellery, fancy goods, furniture, manufactured woodware, drugs and druggists goods, sugar, spirits and tobacco. The articles suggested by the Committee as those upon which revenue might be raised, but which the" Chamber declined to recommend Were timber, grain, packing bags, woolpacks, and coals.
