POLICE OFFICE.
Mcnlay, September 30th, 1844. ■\ This morning a maori man named " Peter," was placed at the bar, charged by George Owen Ormsby, Esq., wiih stealing various articles from bis premises on Friday night last. From the evidence it appealed that between 11 "and 12 o'clock on Friday night last Constables Trainer and Newman were- on duty in Prince when they met the prisoner with a bundle, which they took and examined , a man in the service of Mr. Wood, who came up at the time, was requested by "the constables to ask the prisoner to take them to the place where he brought the things from. The prisoner conducted the constables to Mr. OrmsbyV-gate, and then attempted to run away, bnt was secured, tor. Ormsby identified the goods rm s his property. The prisoner, through Mr. Clarke, Chief Protect tor of Aborigines, confessed that he stole the property found in his possession from Mr. Ormsby. The Court sentenced the prisoner.to six minths confinement, and hard labour. ■ ■ Tuesday, October Ist. 1844. This morning Mr. Thomas Russell, Builder* preferred a charge of assault, on behalf of one of ► his sons, against Mr. John Gnilding, by beating him. It appeared from the evidence of James y Cahill, and Mr James Carlton Hill that the boy was taken into the shop of Mr. Hill, by Mr. Gnilding, where he accused the boy of throwing stones a t '- him; the boy denied rt, when Mr. Guilding took
him by the ears and pulled them sevetely, after which he struck him and knocked his head through a pane of glass. Mr, Guilding in his defence said he was annoyed by the boys' pelting him with stones. The Bench cautioned Mr. Gnilding against taking the law in his own hands in future, bat admitted there was some provocation for his being irritated, and under the circumstances should merely order him to pay the oosts, twelve shillings and sixpence.
