NEW TAXES.
It has been suggested to us, that if any difficulty arises in the Council as to the mode of raising an equivalent for the Customs’ Duties, certain classes of the inhabitants of Towns should be compelled to take out Annual Licences, on the same principle that Auctioneers and Publicans are compelled to pay for exercising their trades.
I.—Lawyers to pay £SO per annum, because they encourage quarrels extort money without giving any tangible value, and carry on a profitable, as well as vexatious business* without Stock or Capital, consequent" ly ought to be taxed in all young Colonies.
2. Apothecaries, £5,0 per annum, because they sell Drugs at enormous profits, and generally of a spurious description. 3. —Haberdashers and Mercers, £IOO per annum, because they tempt us to extravagance and ruin by importing and exhibiting unnecessary finery, which they sell at great profit.
4.—Jewellers and Watch Makers, £25 per annum, because we have no occasion for the Goods of the former, and the latter frequently injure our Watches and charge for doing sow All other Dealers* who merely exchange imported articles for cash, £2O each.— Communicated^
