Poets Corner.
VISIT TO TOTARA, Delightful dell! thy charms I oing, The feathered warblers on the wing, In gayful mood arounn: The murmuring rill, the sighing breeze, The craggy rocks, and stately trees, While daisies deck the ground. The sombre hills with summits high, The lowing oxen grazing by, Now seen, now hid from view; Reposing in their cool retreat. Then basking in the sunny heat Where once the thicket grew. Ascending lo! a prospect gay, Of winding waters seen to play O'er rocks with gentle ease ; Then straggling cottages are seen Surrounded by a live'y green Of beauteous shrubs, and frees. The blushing maid, and sprightly boy. With lightsome hearts, and eager joy, Bound swiftly o'er the plain ; Then hiding in the rural bowers, Unconscious of the fleeting hours, Nor weary of their game. Ah ! why did cruel <ate decoy My footsteps from those scenes of joy That charmed my rustic heart ? But nothing is substantial here f • For pleasure while she seems to cheer In wraps her poisoned dart, Australia. Auckland, August 19,1844^
