PUBLIC MEETING.
The meeting called by advertisement-fn our last paper, was held on Friday night at the Exchange. It was the most nunier-d ously attended of any meeting we have witnessed since the formation of this set* tlement. Mr. Guyton was called to the chair. HHH j Dr. Featherstone submitted a petition to both Houses of Parliament, prayiug; tor an enquiry into the course pursued by his Excellency Captain Fitzr'oy, towardj* the perpetrators of the Wairau Massacre. Dr. Featherstone, in a clear, well arrange cd, and eloquent speech, urged the adoption ot lue petition. Mr. Revans seconded the motion,. Mr. Hart submitted a motion in amendment, to the effect that, thesttitablo period for petitioning Parliament had gone by, Mr. Cooper seconded the amendment. Mr. Vincent and Mr. Revans, opposed the adoption of Mr. Hart's amendment. Mr. Holroyd supported it, and Mr. Roots opposed it. The amendment was lost and the petition adopted by large majorities. Mr. D. Wakefield, supported by Major Baker, submitted a resolution for' the formation of a committee t 0; arrange for getting the petitions sighed and sent home to Lord Brougham and Mr, Roebuck, for presentation to Parliament. The committee was named and the meeting dissolved.— Ibid.
