The Auckland Chronicle. Thursday, August, 15, 1844.
The Dolphin, Captain Stewart, arrived on Sunday last from the Bay of Islands, bringing the mail of the Terror of Auckland, by which we have received Sydney papers a few days later than those brought by the Diana. The Select Committee of the Legislative Council, appointed on the 3rd July, 1844, to consider what steps should he taken with reference to Mr. Lowe’s statement of the breach of Privileges of the House, by Messrs. Henry Macdermott, Samuel Moore, and John Macfarlane, wind up their Report as follows: “ Your committee, therefore, as the best presen* mode of dealing with Messrs. Macdermott, Mooreand Macfarlane, beg to. recom mend that the Attor ney-G neral be requested to move the Supreme Court for leave to file a criminal information against them;..and to prevent all doubt in future cases, your committee likewise recommend that a bill be passed to confer upon the council such powers as may be necessary to its efficiency. RICHARD WINDEYER, Legislative Council Chamber, Sydney, July 12, 1844. After a long discussion the Report was adopted, but there was only a majority of 2 in favour of the first part
of the paragraph above quoted recommending the application of the Attorney-General for leave to file a criminal information against the parties alluded to. The situation of Registrar of the Court of Requests, vacant by the death of R. Allen, Esq., has been conferred upon Captain Brown of the Water Police. It appeals that his Worship, the Mayor of Sydney is to give a grand Fancy Dress Ball, on the 21st inst., at the Victoria Theatre, ’ for which it was expected there would be five hundred cards issued. Sydney seems to be going a-head again. There is no other news of importance.
