We cannot for the life of us resist the opportunity of publishing the following Correspondence— ShortlaDd Crescent. Jaly 27, 1844. Sir, I am directed by S. M. D, Martin, Esq., to demand from you the Author or Authors of the Paragraphs published in the Aucklaud Chronicle of the l6th and 23rd of May last, and of the 18th and 25th instant, reflecting on that Gentleman's character, otherwise you wil be held answerable fot" their publication, and I request your answer by Monday next. I am, Sir, Your obedient Servant, ky Tiros. E. GONRY, Solicitor. Mr. John Moore, Proprietor of the Auckland Chronicle, Chancery Street. July 29th, 1844. Sir, In repiy to yours of the 27th instant, I have to inform you that 1 am the Author of the Paragraphs alluded to. They no n)ore reflect upon Dr. Martin's character, than his aitacks upon the characters of myself, Captains Clendon and Porter; besides many others he has attempted to vilify. If the paragraphs in question have exceeded the fair line of Newspaper criticisms, (which I deny, and which they never were intended to do) the Doctor has only himself to blame; he threw the first stone, *nd made his Journal the vehicle for exposing the private affairs of others. I remain, Sir, Yours most respectfully, JOHN MOORE. Thos. E.GONRY, Esq. Solicitor. The Governor made '• his mistake" in selecting the Doctor as a Counsellor. We cannot doubt but a Jury of our Countrymen, will, teach the Doctor" his mistake" in appealing: to them. b _______
