The Auckland Chronicle. Thursday, June 27, 1844.
a , By the arrival of the " Straihisla " and •*Try|ilieiia" from Sydney, we have received our usual files of Eng'ish, liish, foreign, and Colonial papers, from each {it will be seen on reference to our co JumnsJ we have made such extiacts as aeemed most interesting. The stale trials in Ireland were still going on, anl that unhappy country was 10 a very disturbed, unsettled, and much distressed state. In Wales incendiary fires were going on to au alarming extent; some nights ten or twelve fires took place. Distress prevails in that country to a great extent. In England trade was on the increase, but the greatest distress prevailed in the manufacturing districts, and the SpitalHelds weavers were actually starving; It was in contemplation to get up a Fancy Ball for their Benefit, at the Guildhall. Her Majesty and all the Royal Family %vere in the enjoyment of good health* and on the Ist of February Her Majesty opened Parliament in person, but we are Sorry we have not room for her speech in Our present number. The February Wool Sales, held in Liverpool, were most cheering as there was au advance of Irom two to threepence per pound \ on the tvool sold. Our Sydney papers contain little news of importance to our readers ; the papers are chiefly occupied with discussions on the Squatting Licenses, Insolvent pro- , ceedings, <fcc., and as the Legislative Council met fit the end of last month, there are long debates, to the exclusion of English iSJVws. Kmiurants are arriving in Sy.Jnev, and a petition was presented i to Sir Geo. Gipps on ihe 20th of last : month from the working classes praying that convi s might be wiihdrawn from the streets and public woilcs and (hat they might be employed thereon. There were Several vessels laid on for Auckland in Sydney by our last advices. .
