Total Abstinence Society.—On reference to our advertising columns it will be seen that Mr. Buckingham has kindly lent his Theatre this evening to the Committee of the above Society, in order that they may endeavour fo raise sufficient funds to pay off some debts they have contracted on account of the building. We hope and trust that every well wisher of his adopted country will step forward on this occasion and contribute a mite for so laudable an undertaking. The Society was established in Auckland about two years since, and during that period the entire management of its affairs have been conducted by six or eight individuals who, to their honor be it said, have persevered onward and have used every legal and fair means in their power to place this benevolent Society 00 a firm basis. There are a large number of working men members of the Society but latterly, in consequence of the shortness
of work in Auckland, they have not been able to pay their small weekly subscriptions, but it is to be hoped that those who can afford it will not longer hang back but come forward with their aid. The performances selected for this evening are of an unexceptionable character, and as there are some who from co iscientious mo* lives do not wish to countenance Theatricals, let us hope it will not prevent them from purchasing a few tickets or sending a subscription to the Secretary.
